Nikki and Scott continued drifting downstream, hoping to find protection from the impending rains.  Scenarios of lightning strikes and flash floods went through Nikki's mind.  Chilling squalls and darkening skies invaded the wilderness, blackening the mid-day landscape into the edge of night.  Within moments the sprinkles started, followed by a barrage of wind and driving rains, pummeling everything in sight.

"Hmm," Scott mumbled as he peered towards a riverbank of to the side.  "That looks like an alligator in the water."

"An alligator?"  Like lightning Nikki splashed off her inner tube, flew on top of Scott, and threw her arms around his neck in fright.  "Where is he?  I don't want to get eaten alive!" she squealed.

With a 5'-7", size 7 girl on top of him, Scott struggled to get more comfortable on his tube.  "It wasn't a real alligator that I saw," he grunted.

"What was it then?  Some kind of river monster?" she worried.

"No no.  I meant that a certain log in the water looked like an alligator," he clarified.  "In Florida, sometimes an alligator will be floating in the water, looking just like a log."

Somehow Nikki found herself in the middle of it all, separated from Jennifer & Gina, gradually spreading out along the river like everyone else.  To her delight Scott was just up ahead and by himself, enticing her to want to paddle towards him.  Closer and closer she moved towards the handsome lad...  Eventually the princess warrior was by the dream prince, and not without catching his attention either.

"Whoa," he alertly blurted, propping himself up on his inner tube to find the late-arriving brunette.  "I love your swimsuit," he added, flipping his sunglasses to admire her shimmery silvery one-piece suit.

"Thanks," she replied, delighted that she had caught his attention.  Now feeling pretty good, she comfortably asked, "Mind if I join you?"

Hot humid weather made the Limestone Cliffs tubing trip seem all the more inviting.  The youths of the Bellevue Joy Center stepped off the bus, carrying their rubber inner tubes down a beaten dirt path.  Through a grassy field and across a railroad track they proceeded, through some brush before turning at the edge of a mighty bluff where the infamous cliffs came into view.  Moving in single file, Nikki Newton and her friends took their time making the jagged descent along a rocky trail, through the wooded steeps down to the grassy banks by the water below.

The beauty of the gentle flowing stream enticed Nikki to cool off and take the plunge.  After wading in and submerging completely under, Nikki's head surfaced with a satisfying look on her face.

"Whoa.  Let me see those," Jennifer livened up, going for Scott's photos.

"He just gave 'em to me this morning," Nikki proclaimed proudly.  "I didn't even have time to show Gina.  You're the very first on to see 'em."

The best of friends stared endlessly at the pictures of the handsome school icon, finding it hard to put away the rare greatly prized treasures.

"Wow what prompted him to give you these?  Just friendship?"

     "Something more, I really hope."

"You need to give him a photo or two of you."

"I'm thinking of posing in my black patent-vinyl jeans and jacket."

A sample of what Nikki was like before becoming an Heir of the King!

"Aw, but my friend said I wouldn't get drunk [hiccup].  My friend said 'One little drink won't get you drunk.'  So I had one little drink at a time, [hiccup] over and over again."  The Nikki wildly swung her hand and pointed her finger into the air.  "One little itsy-bitsy teensy-weensy drink at a... [hiccup] time.  [Hiccup]  And it worked."

Nikki grinned and snickered slightly as the female officer placed her hands on her lap and locked them in handcuffs.  Somewhere in the back of Nikki's head, she knew something was wrong with being placed in handcuffs, but she was too spaced out to remember why.

"...After what they did to us yesterday, I got the biggest firecrackers I could find, lit the fuses, and dropped them in their lockers through the vents.

     "You did what?"

"I blew up the biggest firecrackers in their lockers," she explained.  "While everyone was in class, two earth-shattering explosions rocked the hallway.  Everyone lokked out into the hall, but saw nothing.  Even security came downbut they found nothing either.  Then sonya and Tonya's lockers began smoking, 'til classes switched and someone pulled the alarm and got the fire department."

That confession enlightened Nikki.  "So you're the one behind all the ruckus we had this morning."

"Of course I am," Jennifer proclaimed loudly and boiserously.  "You're not gonna go blabbin' on me are you?"

Nikki simply looked at the ceiling and sighed.  "All I can say is a girl will reap whatever she sows."

Along the way Nikki couldn't resist trying to rebuild Jennifer's ripped up letter.  Connotations such as "You shameless, brazen-faced flirt," and "You double-crossing, two-timing man-stealer," led Nikki to believe that she found a clue in explaining the origin of the conflict between Jennifer and Rachel.

...Nikki had to work fast.  She moved in on the venomous serpent,... preparing for the death-defying moment of truth.

"Donny, be ready with that bag," she mumbled, concentrating intently, knowing she couldn't afford to blow her one and only chance.  One slight mistake and tragedy could strike.

Not a word was spoken.  Jennifer clung to Alex, and Gina to Donny.  All four gazed anxiously as Nikki zeroed in on the "mission impossible."

Gluing her eyes like she had never done on anything before, Nikki focused on the area just behind the viper's head... concentrating... concentrating... concentrating...

At that very moment Rachel hurried out of a classroom, running desperately for the girls room down the hall, even though class wasn't over yet.

"That's Rachel," Nikki declared, wondering why Jennifer was so happy.

"Looks like she drank too much prune juice again," Jennifer observed calmly.  "Follow me," she directed the other two, leading the quietly and swiftly through the vacant corridor towards the Girls' Room.

"Jennifer," Nikki called skeptically, "You're not gonna do something to her, are you?"

"I'm just gonna even the score with her a bit."

"Jen, I don't think you should do this..."

"Shh," she sounded, slowing down to a tiptoe pace, then stopping at the Girls' Room door.  "Pew," she whispered, reflecting the disgust on her face.  "They need a stronger exhaust fan in there."

With Nikki and Gina nearby, Jennifer slowly and silently pushed the door open, reached in with her hand, turned the light switch off and ran.

Rachel exploded.  "Who turned out the lights?  I'm gonna kill you!"

Nikki and Gina had no choice but to take off running, too.

"Boy, Nikki.  It's a good thing Rachel's friends Sonya Kick and Tonya Butz weren't with her.  Everybody knows 'em as Kick 'n Butz."

Nikki giggled uneasily.  "Actually, I did encounter all three when I first came here.  On e day when I was eating lunch I thought I'd try becoming friends with them.  They threatened to kick my butt instead."

"Oh boy.  You couldn't have picked a worse group of hoodlums.  They're the most dangerous villains in all of Bellevue, Jennifer warned.

"I see," Nikki peeped, heeding the caring, but gloomy warning.

"Yes, they might be dangerous.  But at least they're not invincible."

"What do you mean by that?" Nikki asked, desiring an explanation.

Jennifer proceeded.  "I once had Kick 'n Butz  in my art class.  One time they bullied their way to the front of the line to get paint.  The squirt bottles they used must've been plugged up, 'cuz after they gave a mighty squeeze, something ruptured and they both got all covered with green paint."

     "You're kidding," Nikki laughed.

"And then there was the time that Rachel looked into a girls' room mirror.  Maybe she said, 'Mirror mirror on the wall,' or maybe she didn't like what she saw.  But by the time she walked out of there, that mirror was completely smashed."

True stories or not, Nikki liked how Jennifer's humor eased her feelings about such gruesome characters.

     ...The locker was slammed shut.

"Hey!" Nikki pouted, turning around and finding Rachel Vander Molen.  "What'd you do that for?" she demanded of the perpetrator, who was back, and looked nastier than ever.

"You've got a lot of nerve," the culprit snubbed.

"I've got a lot of nerve?" the innocent one questioned in shock.

"You eavesdrop on me in lunch.  You threaten me at a party.  But now you've outdone it all by  blabber-mouthing on me in favor of the enemy," she hissed.

"What are you talking about?" Nikki sought, urgently and quickly.

"First of all you got Dr. Martin mad at me for bringing justice against Jennifer DORKmeier.  Then Mr. Tikedoff the janitor blamed me for plugging up the school toilets.  The Mrs. Runz got mad 'cause she couldn't go to the bathroom when her extra-strength laxative kicked in.

Nikki was caught off guard by the rude intruder, but felt  she knew what Rachel was talking about.  "Are you referring to Friday's incident in the gym locker room?"

"What's wrong?" Nikki asked compassionately, as the downtrodden girl passed her way.

"That psycho just flushed my clothes down the toilet.  I'll kill her," she pouted.

Nikki tried to be as understanding as possible.  "Do you have any idea what you're gonna do about it?"

"Beats me; I'm stuck in this locker room.  I have no clothes now, and I can't go anywhere in just my underwear."

"Let's see if I can help you," Nikki sympathesized, peering into the contents inside her duffel bag.  Thinking over the situation and recalling some lessons from her disciplship Sunday School class, Nikki got an idea as she began to undress.

"What are you doing?" the girl asked, calming down from her little fiasco and being more upbeat now that someone wanted to help her.

"You look like a size 7 to me.  Why don't you try my dress," Nikki offered, taking it off and handing it to her.

"You can't just take your clothes off and give 'em to me," the curly-blonde blurted, amazed that anyone in Bellevue High could be so generous.  "What are you gonna wear?"

"I'm gonna wear what I planned to wear to 1717 Broadway tonight, when my friend Gina and I go there tonight...," Nikki explained while putting on her blue jeans and tank top, and topping it with her glossy, black vinyl biker jacket.

"Hurry, Nikki please," she begged, nearly crying.

"Do you believe Jesus Christ has the power to heal her?"

"I do, I do.  Please hurry!"

Was it demons?  Was it sickness?  Nikki heard the testimonies of how Jesus healed and delivered people at church.  She recalled how Jesus had healed a boy with seizures that were caused by an evil spirit, through prayer and fasting  Nikki was already fasting that day.

Looking at Scott, the princess warrior asked, "Are you ready for the Lord Jesus to do a miracle?"

"Absolutely," he affirmed, as the two Christians made their way towards Annie.  Not worried about what anyone thought, Nikki and Scott interceded and prayed loudly and intensively, sternly rebuking the seizure by shouting, "In the name of Jesus I command you seizure, let go of her!"

Immediately, Annie stopped convulsing.  Within seconds the writhing and redness in her face were completely gone as she laid on the floor, gradually relaxing, much to the amazement of all the onlookers.

Abruptly, the spiked-hair girl pulled a knife from her denim jacket  and pointed it into Nikki's side.  "Gimme that ring, now," she growled.

The princess warrior was alerted that Satan's demons were controlling the other girl.  She used her shield of faith to extinguish the fear the Devil hurled at her.  Recalling that some people in her church drove demons away in Jesus' name, Nikki dared to do the same.

Again the robber echoed, "Gimme that ring or I'll kill you!"

Nikki look straight at the spiked-hair girl and sternly shouted, "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to GET OUT OF HERE!"

The spiked-hair girl panicked and amazingly, rushed from the seat to the emergency exit at the back of the bus.  Everyone was astounded.

Notes from her Bible detailed the armor of God, which she now had and was using against the Devil's schemes.  The armor was so mysterious, yet so interesting - the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the boots of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of Salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  As a child of the King, the young princess warrior prepared to continuously defeat Satan, and to tell others that they can be free from him, too.  A princess warrior - it had such a nice ring to it, that Nikki decided to think of herself as being one.

Further investigation revealed fascinating insights to her, of certain signs that would follow them that believe, like driving out demons, picking up snakes, healing the sick, not being harmed from drinking deadly poison, and so on...  Now she believed that through prayer and faith in Jesus, God could do the same kinds of miracles through her, wherever and whenever the need might be.

...Nikki had to hurry to the restroom, so off she went, down the hall, through the door, and into a toilet partition.  While she took care of business, Nikki heard another woman come through the door.  It sounded as if she stopped by the mirror, probably to make sure she looked her best.  Quickly the other woman left, unknowingly turning the light out on Nikki.

"Hey!" she yelled, caught off guard and now in the dark.  "What's the matter with her?" she complained.  "Couldn't she tell I was in here?"

A tiny amount of light was shining into the restroom through the bottom of the door.  Nikki inched her way out of the partition, then made a beeline for the exit, but she bashed her shin into something along the way.

"Shhhhhh-in!" she hissed in excruciating pain, stopping short of what the devil wanted her to say.  "Oh my shin," she grimaced again.

The accident, caused by things beyond Nikki's control, had her hop around on one leg, wanting to cuss all kinds of unmentionables.  But then the 1-2-3-4 of Christian maturity came to mind.  Passing trials like these would build her faith, so instead of swearing, Nikki praised the Lord in her painful situation by shouting, "Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!"

...Hundreds moved and grooved to the music's beat.  No showing off or dirty dancing here; just joyous dancing reflecting the positive attitude they had towards worshiping God.  Nikki, who loved to dance, forgot about her troubles and joined in the worship, grooving with the others around her, and singing to the words on the big screen above the stage...

"This is a church service?" Nikki asked Scott in surprise.

     "It sure is!" he exclaimed.

"It's exciting in here, like a rock concert..."

Deeper and deeper she waded in, drawing closer to the falls, closer and closer until the water got too deep, forcing her to swim.  Atop the choppy waters she paddled  to a steep and jagged bank, just to the side  of the falls.  From the sun-glistened ripples she climbed out of the water and onto a rocky ledge.

Panting and dripping wet, Nikki took a moment to catch her breath, then continued towards the falls, inching sideways, facing the waters from whence she swam.  The steep ascending bank was against her back.  Stones tumbled into the pool below as she patiently sidestepped the narrow shelf.  Mossy patches along the way served only to make her footing slippery.  The determined young woman gingerly moved closer, a little at a time.  Along the crumbling ledge she carefully crept, until reaching her destiny, and dousing herself beneath the refreshing falls.

"A bigger, greater battle?" Nikki gasped, wary and curious of terms she had never heard before.  Sounds like we're involved in a fairy tale or some kind of inter-galactic space movie of sorts."

The young man explained.  "The battle here is not people versus people, or the social games that go with them.  Rather, it involves the forces behind the people, with most people unaware that Satan - the devil himself - has been deceiving them and leading them to a life of destruction and torment, and ultimately an eternity in Hell.  The devil tempts them, and because they have no power over him, they've become mean, or proud, or put others down, or else they follow those who do.  And as for the victims of these people, the devil tries to make them feel discouraged and even worse."

"How can anybody make friends in this school and avoid destruction and Hell?  Is there any hope?"

"Ah yes," he smiled with joy.  "The Almighty God, who created the universe and has everything under control, also cares about everyone here.  His means of escape from deceit and destruction is through His Son, Jesus Christ..."

"Hey Nikki, wait a minute," Suzy requested, hoping the newcomer wouldn't get away.  "How would you like to come to our party tonight?"

"Party?"  Nikki's ears perked up nicely at the sound of being invited to something as exciting as that.  "What party?  Who's gonna be there?"

"Only everybody who's anybody at this school," Suzy declared...

"Hmm," Nikki smiled, dreaming of the possibilities.  "You know I love music and dancing, and I've been dying to show my moves."

"We've got music and dancing.  And a cute girl like you should have no trouble meeting our guys.  Good lookin' ones, too.

Guys, music, dancing...  Nikki was getting excited, but she had one more secretive thing she had to ask.
